The National Institute for Open Schooling is a highly ambitious education project encompassing around 1.5 million students in India and overseas. The NIOS system delivers secondary (class X equivalent) and senior secondary (class XII equivalent) courses in a 100% virtual enrollment process (since 2010-11). The classes are not virtual though as the system functions through 3367 accredited study points in India and abroad. The NIOS has five departments managing a network of 11 regional centres across the country. Besides the usual programs, students can enroll at vocational and life-enrichment courses.
The NIOS portal is also the implementation point of a highly novel education concept. The On Demand Examination arrangement at NIOS is probably the one among its kind across the world. This path-breaking system allows students to appear at examinations at their personal discretion. There is no set deadline to complete the syllabus. Once you feel ready, you can generate a random question paper on your subject through your student access point.
The regional centre or the concerned officer can also assist with the process. The NIOS arrangement is a milestone development into popularizing cost-effective quality education at an era when study expenditure easily involves the investments of several lakhs. The nodal Government body continues to play a key role at fostering Open and Distance education across diverse social layers.
